It's irrelevant to teh generation it belongs to. It wouldn't matter if Wii had the performance of an Magnavox Oddyssey or the K Super Computer in Japan. The marketing concpet was such to pay more attention to the new methods of gaming input rather than the continual performance increases as a means to change gameplay that has been commonplace in previous generations.
The marketing philosophy behind the Wii as we know it and the originally conceived GC peripherals are largely the same. But as I said, it's irrelevant regarding the organizational constructs of video game generations. 7th gen is 7th gen, regardless of the performance capabilites of the consoles contained therein.
