It didn't matter to past Nintendo consoles because they were aimed at a different market. The Wii U is now trying to compete with MS and Sony directly so at a minimum (!) it needs all major cross platform titles to have a Wii U entry of equal standing. At best it also needs third party exclusives to persuade the core to buy Wii U OVER those other two.
