Something must change, and I think Kaz wants to go in the right direction. Just the name change from PSN to SEN seems to be a very, very, very little step on that path. I'm pretty skeptical about Sony situation, let's hope Kaz won't do only some cut and nothing more.

The point is how do you use that union of software and hardware without completely alienating other software vendors and harware manufacturers. Very tricky.

I have no idea what you think software/hardware synergy means, but are you saying Apple, Microsoft, and now Google are "alienating software vendors and harware manufactuers"?
Software synergy to me, is to create a family of products that are all interconnected. Apple is the prime role model for this. iPhone, iPod, iPad all use the same software, and it looks nicer if you have that software on a Mac (although you don't have to).
All firms are going this direction, including Google.

Of course I know what synergy means.... you re missing the point. Sony want to use THEIR OWN content as a usp for THEIR OWN hardware, ie use the synergy but enhance it by having exclusive sony content on timed exclusivity or permanent exclusivity...
It isnt just about synergy
how does anyone else do what I have just described? or is even in a position to try to? I wasnt aware that Apple made movies or had a music publishing business...

You're assuming way too many things. Proprietary formats aren't necessary to have synergy. Yes, Sony has taken that strategy, but we have no idea if they intend to discontinue it, or not. I believe that they will not, given how Sony is now using the android and seem like they're going to be abandoning the cell processor.
