Sometimes, what you want isn't what's best for you.
Suppose Disney makes a new Mickey Mouse movie to appeal to a new fanbase. Mickey's clothes are rendered in beautiful CGI and so detailed, you could see the stitching in the fabric. His body was rendered so well, you could see the fur on his arm. He was in an environment that rivaled Avatar in its beauty. It would fucking suck.
2D Mario isn't about pushing a console to its limits. 2D Mario is about taking the game back to what made people fall in love with the 8-Bit games of their childhood. Simple graphics, fun gameplay, cheerful music, and familiar themes. 2D Mario is video game comfort food and we love it. We don't want it to change. I'm gonna love it, my kid is going to love it, and maybe even her kid will love it. Hell, my non-gaming cousins that played Mario when they were kids will probably enjoy it. Meanwhile the graphical beasts of today will WISH they had the longevity of a 2D Mario game.
