I love the art style of the NSMB games. It really fits the way the games play. They're sober, relatively simplistic 2D games, yet still brilliantly fun. Thus, graphics that are sober and simplistic, but still look relatively nice, are quite fitting.
For other games, like Donkey Kong Country Returns, simplistic graphic would be completely off. It's more of a whacko and crazy 2D platformer, so more whacky graphics with more explosions and stuff happening fits the game a lot better.
