Gen 4 was what got the whole competitive scene going properly, I have literally put 100s of hours making competitve teams (IV+RNG breeding/EV training) and battling people online. Gen 5 made it even better. Oh the fun of battling real people competitively with all the crazy mind games you can play and intricate movesets you can put on your pokemon.
There's no reason not to play pokemon, no matter what age and what gamer you are.
