I really am dumbfounded by the "sales don't matter" argument. It is ... just gawd ... sad. A website that revolves around sales and suddenly the sales don't matter.

Got to love the the internet, the people, and especially the fans. Unbelievable XD

Sales won't matter after the next-gen kicks off, which is when the PS3 will most likely permanently surpass the 360 in LTD sales (I expect a bit of back-and-forth between the two going into next year as both recieve price cuts in the coming months).

Still, it will be fun to watch Sony fans claim "victory" over M$ even though Sony lost all the momentum it had going from the previous gen and a bunch of exclusive 3rd party franchises in the process.  And if it weren't for the fact that M$'s presence is non-existent in one of the three big gaming markets out there (Japan), 360 would have left the PS3 in the dust in total sales a long time ago.

How come sales don't matter after a generation's end? Of course every sale matters! Generations have overlapping starts and finishes. Look at how much the PS2 still sells - it's from the past generation for sure but it still overtakes Xbox 360 in Japan certain weeks... so it's certainly not insignificant, and the amount of consoles sold still add up to lifetime totals and hold up against newer generation consoles (PS2 vs DS).

I think that after "the great PS3 depression" of 2007-2008, it is a great "victory" for Sony to have even stayed in the market, closed the gap this much and maintain all third party support.
