x86 architecture instead of POWER for CPU makes no sense. Neither if they choose the value way, nor if they choose the power one, in both cases POWER 7, or even better 8, if they'll release later, could give more computing power for money and for watt. No further development of Cell's SPE cores could make a little more sense, anyway this wouldn't necessarily imply abandoning them, as the 2008 SPE evolution IBM developed for its back then highest performance CPUs is a lot more powerful than SPEs used in PS3's Cell and could be enough not only for 8th gen, but maybe even for 9th, given how slowly developers arrived to fully exploit the original ones' potential, and considering that in the future SPEs could be used more for physics and other things and not anymore for graphics.
An AMD GPU instead totally makes sense, as if it's true that ATI-AMD and NVidia often swap places at the leadership for graphics, consoles never use top-end GPUs, as their cost and power consumption are excessive, but in the medium and low range AMD ofters more often and consistently (not always, just more often, but it should be enough to make a choice) the better value for money.
