Really hope these are no where near the actual specs. The only thing that could save them is if they went to a yearly model progression. So this thing hits this year with the 400 core APU, and the 500 Stream processor GPU with 1GB each. Then a 2014 model with 800 core apu, 1000 stream processor GPU and 2GB each. So on and so forth. In this case Code can remain the same and devs can just scale like with PC.

What on earth do you base that bullshit on?

A field that looks to have much more of a drive to make the best product on the market, much higher accepted hardware prices, and a much larger push at advancing technology. The next Tegra chip is said to be a mini Kepler design which should destroy this tech. Then with the major advancments in CPU design set for the coming months, this should be a breeze to surpass. Granted it will only be in $800 models, but I spend the money were tech is being pushed, so it don't bother me.

The good thing is, with all the competition, and the massive spike in capable hardware, devs should be more able to make whatever they want without limits. Hopefully we are heading back to the time when having a $3000 computer actually affords you something special. These past couple years of higher res, high framerate console ports have taken the edge off PC gaming.

I think you grossly misunderstand the gap between desktop PC hardware and mobile hardware. They are not even in the same range. Tablets and smartphones havent even caught up to current gen consoles, and yet you say that when new consoles are released they will overtake them in a year.

The vita is currently the most advanced mobile device in terms of hardware specs, it will probably remain so for the most part of this year. Most manufacturers have already released/announced their 2012 lineups and almost all are inferior to vita. The next wave of tablets and smartphones will probably be on par with vita coming end of this year/begin of next. Only after that wave of releases will we see most manufacturers move to next gen tec from mobile tec companies like the power vr rogues series etc. Those devices will probably release mid/end of 2013 and will still be behind CURRENT console hardware based on current trends in mobile hardware power increases.

So i really dont know what you are on about. You talk about the "drive" of the mobile computing industry? The only reason such great steps forward has been made is because its easier to get better the worse you are. And 5 - 10 years back mobile computing wasnt anywer. So obviously given the increase in popularity of smartphones/tablets etc. there has been a greater focus on the hardware and theres been great progress over the years. But the more they progress the slower that progress will occur.

And, what about the progress and drive of intel, nvidia and amd? The last two/three years intel particularly has made some amazing progress in terms of performance as well as price. And since next gen consoles will all in some way benefit from the progress of these companies, it itself becomes a industry (the console gaming industry) that has  progress and drive in terms of hardware performance and aspirations.

I will try my best to exactly describe were I am coming from. Most importantly, I wan't to make sure it is uderstood I am basing these feelings on the current rumored specs. They are of course, subject to change, and could move in a different direction than these rumors paint.

With that said, consoles have always been, in my eyes the same concept as a production super car. That would make your insane PC's like a lingenfelter, a hennessey, a Saleen, ect. With you common box store PC/ laptop being the run of the mill compact/midsize/fullsize car, SUV, or truck. Now, with these current leaked specs, it looks like console manufacture are going to veer from that concept in favor of mass acceptance. In my head it would be like Chrysler or GM destroying the Viper or Corvette because they started to care more about sales than itegrity of the product. Ten years ago, a Viper or Corvette could be had for 50 to 70K for the lead model. Now with the increase in requirments to be competitive with Europe and Asia, along with inflation, a flagship edition of these vehicals will run you about 110 to 120k. These kind of specs for a next gen console would be the equivilent of them deciding they want to go back and try to compete with the Camrey and Accord, so they have to bring these cars back even futhur and make them a 40 to 50k product. Now, in the end it does not matter if these products drop to rediculous prices, 25 to 30k for the cars, or 199 to 249 for the consoles. They serve a market that is not ever going to reach the heights of a Camery or Accord.

So, now I see it like MS and Sony have lost their souls to the greed and mass market. Were in the high end tablet market they have the spirit and drive to make the super car, to have that flagship product. Increases in technology have always been driven by a partenership of buisness, and enthusiasts. Buisnesses have the resources to develope the product to the next level, and enthusiasts will spend the cash to bring the tech to the consumer market. If these specs are the case of the next gen, the consoles makers have taken the keys away from the enthusiasts and sold their souls. That is why if these specs are found true, the mobile market, and the PC market will start to eat into their market share, and be able to see massive increases in performance. That is why in year of these consoles launch mobile tech will surpass them. Sony and MS are playing polotics when the consumer wants to be entertained.
