The x86 side of Windows 8 really has nothing to worry about as they already have all the apps in the world. Microsoft has said that they will allow x86 aps to be listed in the app store hence there will be 100,000s of apps for Windows 8 available in there very fast. And for people that were born before 2007, they can still go ahead and install programs the old fashioned way...by downloading them and isntalling them manually.
For Windows 8 on ARM, microsoft has to figure something out. Now that its clear that ARM wont have backwards compatibility with x86 they have to convince devs to make ARM based apps and fast.
I can see them merging Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 on ARM completely. Make it the exact same platform...This would give them a boost of 100,000 apps expected to be available on Windows Phone by the time Windows 8 launches and would encourage development for Windows Phone and Windows 8 on ARM at the same time.
