I personally don't think that Call of Duty would save the Vita unless it's a completely different game than what is releasing this fall on home consoles. I'm leaning more toward a Grand Theft Auto game being able to help the system because GTA is one of the highest selling series on a Sony handheld and even the YOP of GTA:Chinatown Wars almost hit a million in physical sales (not sure how much digital sales were but 70k doesn't seem too unattainable).

Also, to me it feels that Sony are trying to release as many releases before the holiday season to have a competitive holiday with Nintendo. While some people are knocking on the "lack of games coming out." I noticed they didn't just have more games launch with their system than the 3DS but they have a constant flow of games coming out, which the 3DS did not start with. Since the launch of the Vita, they've released quite a few games (Unit 13, MMA Supremacy, MLB: The Show, Ninja Gaiden) and have a lot of games releasing over the next couple of months (LBP, Gravity Daze, Disgaea, Resistance, Silent Hill). And then e3 will launch and give us our next set of games that are to be released on the Vita. This isn't to knock on Nintendo considering that none of those games will ever likely to touch the Mario games and don't really have much of a chance at touching Legend of Zelda: OoT either. It's just an opinion of what Sony are trying to do with the market.

Good points here. A COD game probably wouldn't shake the current install base on the HD consoles, and FPS' never really took off on handhelds. A GTA, whilst possible, is unlikely, what with GTA V coming out soon. This is unlikely to get a release on the Vita, so a new GTA game can be rules out for at least a year or two.

I think E3 will show us what Sony have got up their sleeve for the holidays, and I'm expecting something big and unexpected...
