Not to the Japanese it isn't. Japan loves them some Monster Hunter! That is why Sony need it over in Japan, it would bring up HW sales. |
Here's this generation's top 10 selling portable games in Japan:
| Position | Game (Console) | Sales |
| 1 | New Super Mario Bros. (DS) | 6,440,000 |
| 2 | Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) | 6,040,000 |
| 3 | Pokemon Black/White (DS) | 5,550,000 |
| 4 | Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS) | 5,330,000 |
| 5 | Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day! (DS) | 5,320,000 |
| 6 | Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (PSP) | 4,700,000 |
| 7 | Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS) | 4,350,000 |
| 8 | Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! (DS) | 4,160,000 |
| 9 | Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP) | 4,130,000 |
| 10 | Mario Kart DS (DS) | 4,070,000 |
So while Monster Hunter isn't the top dog in Japan... it still was a franchise that kept Sony's portable in the fight, even against the incredible onslaught of the DS phenomenon.
PSP's next two biggest selling games?
| Position | Game | Sales |
| 1 | Monster Hunter Freedom 2 | 1,750,000 |
| 2 | Monster Hunter Freedom | 1,030,000 |
What's crazy is that the PSP has no other million seller in Japan. Every single title that hit a million for the PlayStation Portable came from the Monster Hunter franchise. So it's quite an important franchise for Sony.
What's scary is thinking about a portable system with 2D Mario, Pokemon, Brain Training, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and Monster Hunter in its roster. The 3DS has some crazy sales potential, that's for sure.
