If you eliminate the systems that (realistically) had no chance of being successful you're left with the Dreamcast, XBox 360 and Sega Saturn ...
The XBox 360 is the perfect example of growing userbase and increasing marketshare, the Dreamcast would have performed subtantially better than the Saturn had it lived longer than 2 years, and the Sega Saturn was the product of Sega in the ultimate self-destructive mode (release the Sega CD and 32X with limited support, follow up with the Saturn with limited/support and sell it at a massive premium).
As a general guideline, releasing before the successor to the market leading console is a good way to grow userbase and marketshare but is no guarantee of being the market leading console.
