I don't disagree with the plan being to support the Vita over the 3DS. After all, this held also true during the PSP vs. DS days. If third parties could pick their prefered winner, they would always choose anyone but Nintendo. However, plans are going to change when the prefered outcome is unlikely to materialize. At its current sales rate, the Vita simply isn't a viable option for exclusive game development. The Vita Game Heaven event made it pretty obvious that third parties are taking a wait-and-see stance for now. The Japanese schedule was pretty dry for the Vita and this was an opportunity to announce a few new games, because the next event (Tokyo Game Show) was half a year away. The future doesn't look very promising for the Vita with everyone waiting that somebody else does something. You are implying multiplatform development for the PSV and 3DS, but what you forget is that the Circle Pad Pro is the equivalent of the Wii's Classic Controller. A non-mandatory peripheral for a system that is greatly underpowered when compared to its competition. Which means the 3DS would need to become the lead platform, because it's easier to touch up the graphics than to downgrade them. So when it comes to the multiplatform option for the PSV, you will either get inferior versions of PS360 games or marginally better looking games than on the 3DS. Either way isn't encouraging software sales and thus the results won't encourage third parties to spend more money on Vita game development. Which brings us back to the initial question. You said that you expect awesome Vita games at E3. Who is going to make them and what will they be? There is of course the possibility that third parties will act against better judgment and persistently put top tier games on the Vita until they have established a viable marketplace, but the chances for that to happen are definitely slimmer this time around. Still, it can't be ruled out completely, so I'll give you that. |
it's current sales rate is only vindictive of a slow start, a slow start that will pick up once the games you think they shouldn't/aren't making because of the slow start eventually end up on the system, the more games they make higher the system will pick up.
and 3rd parties this generation have proven they'd rather go high end instead of low end, my point is given that the current situation for Vita is a launch situation multiplatform is easier option for better profit margin without the 3ds being the clearly inferior machine that it is, I mean you hear people saying 3ds games can match Vita games now (which I think is be very generous) but 2-3 years from now once the power of the Vita is more easily harnessed it would be comparing ps3 games to wii games, but it's not 2 years from now, it's launch, remember ps3 games didn't live up to the hype at launch not only because they were not as good as the 05 trailers, they were also worse than games seen on 360.
That's the advantage the 3ds has now for 3rd parties, effort in launch games don't have to be the best and aren't expected to be, much like the situation with 360 and ps3, 3rd party games were either exclusive to 360 or miltiplat, but after 2-3 years 08-09 complete turn around, because by that time the Vita would have amassed a userbase large enough to justify high profile 3rd party games that utilize the systems power, now of course 1st parties will beat them to the punch but that's the thing with Sony platforms, 1st parties and 3rd parties complement each other not compete, the better Sony first party titles do the better more motivated 3rd parties become.
Like I said ubisoft, activision, bethesda, ccp, and various other first and third parties will announce games I'm sure will blow people away I can't pin point exactly who, or what but I can assure that they're coming. People are mistaking Sony not doing much as a sign of nothing to come, "why aren't they in panic mode like Nintendo last year, game heaven underwhelmed Vita future looks murky"...umm no game heaven was a web cast nothing more nothing less, and they aren't worried because they don't have to be, as I've said before in another thread, when the 3ds was doing poorly so was everything else Nintendo, they weren't lighting up the chartz at all and seeing how the wii was falling completely off a cliff the 3ds was really all they had so drastic measures had to be taken, not so with Sony, Playstation as a whole is doing fine, better than everyone else in fact, so Sony has the luxury to wait until E3,Gamescom, TGS to show the future of the Vita, allow the developers time to straighten up and better their games so when they do announce stuff it's more than this

Vita might not be making tons of money but it isn't losing any either so they're just letting it coast, whatever it does means nothing, now after the big gaming conventions and when it gets it's first true holiday I believe things will be very different
