That is what the defintion of "winning" the generation has been. And it has been universally accepted until this generation when the one who won by that metric was not expected by anyone and was not wanted to win by those who felt had ownership of the industry (the gaming "media" and the "core" gamers). So other metrics have been adopted to try to create the result that everyone anticipated and wanted for this generation.
These are businesses. To them it is about profit and sales. And there Nintendo has won this generation.
