if Sony supported the ps2 for 12 years there's nothing to say they can't do the same with the ps3

...and how does that answer my question?  PS2 sales and PS3 sales are not correlated.  

PS2 sales after 12 years are 1500 per week in japan... mostly replacement purchases.  PS3 wont have the same install base for replacement purchases so what do you expect PS3 weekly sales to be in 2018?

Who says they're replacement purchases? If history repeats itself, the PS3 will sell long after PS4 comes out, even PSP is selling after Vita's launch. Thats whats always been with Sony consoles.
