Based on wikipedia, a console is an interactive entertainment computer or customized computer system that produces a video display signal which can be used with a display device (a television, monitor, etc.) to display a video game.

Companies like Sony or Microsoft love the term "console" because it excludes handhelds so they can use it to comment on NPD sales and make things look much better than they really are.
