The point of avatars is simply representation and recognition. It's far easier to remember a picture than a name. And you tend to learn the names of those with consistent avatars.

Typically, if I enter a thread with 40+ posts, I don't bother to read it unless I recognise the avatars of some of my favourite users in a quick scroll down.
