Today is the last day of GDC 2012. There’s still plenty of news to go around and one of the most active companies there is Paradox Interactive. They’ve released a ton of details for many of their upcoming titles and we’ve rounded up a few.
First off, they’ve adapted their earlier released teaser trailer of Warlock: Masters of the Arcane to contain gameplay footage. In this clip, we can see just how armies and hexes work, how magic affects armies and so on. We also get a closer look at all the units available in the game, as well as their appearance and vivid colors. Lastly, it also briefly takes a look at city attacks. It still has the Sean Connery mockery in there though. This 4X strategy title in the vein of Civilization V will be coming out in Q2 2012 for PC, but no release date has been set yet.
Secondly, they’ve also released the first in-game footage for their chivalrous basher War of the Roses. This title has been pegged as a ‘medieval Battlefield’ and the pre-alpha footage already shows some of that grandeur. It also bears a resemblance to another title in the publisher’s stable called Mount & Blade, but with extremely better graphics. The video details some of the combat in both melee and ranged aspects, movement, as well as player and level scope. A large number of players can be seen hurdling towards each other as they go to war. Additionally, some of the animations like capacious jumps display the game’s character designs which will benefit the action at hand. War of the Roses might be a curious title to look out to. This PC game will bring death before dishonor in Q3 of 2012.
The publisher also has a new developer diary for their upcoming MMO Salem. In it, creative director Björn Johannsen discusses the law mechanics of the game. If players commit crimes towards others, they’ll leave a particular scent that can be traced. In order to boost chances of picking this up, players can invest in authority objects or improve their skills to track more efficiently. Additionally, the town ranger can help investigate the crime and lead players to the appropriate culprit.
Salem has one particular element that truly requires forethought when committing crimes. When criminals get caught, they’ll engage in battle with others and can be killed for their misdeeds. However, death in Salem is permanent and those that bite the dust will have to start again from the beginning. An immediate death sentence should stop petty crimes alright. This PC title will also become available somewhere in Q3 of 2012.
Lastly, their FPS/RTS hybrid Gettysburg: Armored Warfare will get integrated with Steam Workshop, allowing players to fully mod the upcoming title. As the name suggest, this Steam exclusive is based on an alternative reality of the Civil War where technology had already advanced to a more steampunk era. Paradox has said to release this game ‘soon’. It will allow for 64 players at once and will be able to generate up to 1000 units on the battlefield.
