I personally don't think the majority of the hardcore market need a dedicated portable gaming system, therefore sony can't assume their safe. I haven't bought a Vita yet, the cards are a bloody rip off... but that doesn't mean that i drift the the ipod touch, i already own one and the experience is not comparable, therefore my ownership is not exclusive one or the other. The 3DS is the actual competition but i think theres a strong enough difference in tastes for both to coexist. The marginal customers you refer to would probably make up the majority of any system which manages to sell more then 30m.

I'll clarify. "They know the whiny hardcore gamer will buy it regardless because it is the only game in town for that crowd" No, i think theres a risk a strong portion of this market will simply skip Hardcore portable gaming completely, i consider myself a core gamer but missed out on last gen portables. I had planned on buying a Vita at launch but various things put me off, pricing of cards is one of them. I indend to buy it in the future but if behaviour is common in regards to being put off early adoption, devleopers may stay clear of the system, which will cause me to loose interest in purchasing it at all and thus the systems sale fall further. So i don't they can afford to "poop" on people.
I think i may of mis interpreted the last paragraph of your comment, so ignore my response to that.
