Small games won't be the sole reason but they will definitely be responsible for becoming remaining active with the device and thus spreading word of mouth. Also we're not simply talking about angry birds, games like limbo and the jouney which are incredibly unique experiences, which i think are far more enticing on a handheld. As for classics, nintendo moves at a snails pace, it will be 2015 before they start making GBA games available for download on the 3DS. "if Nintendo makes use of what they've got" I'd also argue that nintendo hasn't got very much, the archive of their main franchises have more or less been exploited. Im suggested sony look at the ps2 catalogue (arguably the biggest of any system) and take advantage of the brilliant 3rd party software. The 3DS gets up to the dreamcast before porting becomes a problem, it can't play gamecube/ps2/Xbox games without fairly modification to both the visuals and control scheme. It needs to be inexpensive, the Vitas power allows for this.

Nintendo has the most valuable back catalog in the video game business. That's a fact. Consider that Nintendo can sell an overhauled classic game for $30 at retail while makers of PS2 software have to combine three of their games and still reach considerably lower sales at the same price.
If Nintendo breaks down the barrier between the Wii's and the 3DS's Virtual Console service and makes it one, then they'll be comfortably ahead of Sony. The 3DS doesn't need to be able to emulate sixth generation home console software, because the real gold comes from the third and fourth generation.

well i disagree, their not directly comparable. Nintendo's back catalogue is caters to a much older generation of gamers, and is limited to the sprite era's. the most recent generation is far more likely attract a younger audiences (teens) in my opinion. "Consider that Nintendo can sell an overhauled classic game for $30" the only games which come to mind is Ocarina Of Time 3D....
