[edit: For a more serious answer, the big-endian system can truncate the year (and month) as easily as most people truncate seconds on the other end: you can say "March 3rd" or "the 3rd" (although that's hardly much faster) on the assumption that the year is not going to get confused unless you are writing something in long-term records. Saying "the 3rd of March" doesn't seem any more logical than "March 3rd".]
