How likely is that this thing would be backwards compatible?

Some people say it's possible, but my (not well informed, I'm not tech savvy) instincts tell me that emulating the PS3 with a single generation's leap would be extremely hard. Even harder than for PS3 to run PS2 games through emulation probably.

I am certain that emulating the PS3 next generation will be impossible, unless it carries over the same components or very similar components, which according to this article, it will not. We can't even emulate the Xbox 360 on PC's yet, and if professional developers who make games with multi-million dollar budgets struggle to develop games for the system itself even to this day, then how the hell are we expected to emulate it next generation? I doubt CELL will be emulation the generation after either.

It's a shame, but I think the PS3 will continue to sell well into next gen and people won't be bothered by it. It may hurt SONY in the short run, but in the long run, it will stop them from bleeding money.
