The 3DS will clearly fall short of that, because Nintendo isn't putting out the software that is needed for such sales levels. And since the Wii U launch will be interfering, Nintendo's focus is going to shift too soon to make the 3DS a monster like the DS.

However, just because Nintendo can't match the DS performance in the foreseeable future doesn't mean that they can't outdo the DS later on in the lifecycle. It all depends on Nintendo's commitment to the platform in the coming years.

Well, what software should Nintendo put out this year to reach those levels?

Wrong question. In order to reach those levels Nintendo would have needed to put out at least a couple of these games already. To match the DS on the road to 10m, Nintendo needs to sell five million 3DSes in seven months, that's 700k per month or more than 150k per week. Currently they sell about half of that.

The 3DS needs a REAL Mario game, Pokémon generation VI, its own Tetris (not literally Tetris) and a myriad of other games that have proved themselves on the DS already. Nintendo needs to put out more games that make DS owners buy a 3DS. Of course, appealing to those who never bought a DS will increase sales too, but Nintendo should not forget about their core audience.

Those games are coming(not sure what u mean by its own, not literally tetris. Pushmo?). Unless you wanted Ninty to release couple of those in it's first year which didn't even happen with DS.

DS was selling above 100K before those games were out anyways, so we have to talk about the "myriad of other games".
