This is a bit presumptuous, unless you just mean so far, which I would agree with. There's still plenty of time for Nintendo to adopt this strategy, as the system is barely a year old. 2D Mario coming in the next fiscal year is already a great start. And according to the reports, Nintendo won't be losing money on the hardware for much longer at all.
OT: Great news for 3DS. On the topic of a redesign, the DS Lite arrived about a year and a half after the original launched (at least here in the States), but there were two two big areas that needed improvement: Size and screen brightness. Being that the only unanimous problem for 3DS is battery life, I don't see a 3DS Lite happening on that schedule (i.e. any time this year). We'll know for sure at E3.
