The real reason for the losses is that Japan is a relatively resource poor nation with a high standard of living. The thing which is really killing them is high energy prices and in the future the countries which have a large supply of any key resource albeit food, energy, ore etc per capita and sovereignty over the distribution and use of those resources will do significantly better than those whom do not.
