No, I've heard of that "controversy" before. Even though I wasn't alive then. |
You have to understand that, at that time, video games were becoming more realistic. The media was all over the games industry for every little thing. You have people like Jack Thompson these days, crusading against violent video games like Grand Theft auto--the popular target even though games like Saints Row are MUCH worse. Back then, we had a million uninformed, fearful Jack Thompsons. Nintendo was actually applauded by a lot of these media groups while Sega was the target. Made them seem more kiddy but it saved them a lot of bad press. Of course, money talks. By the time Mortal Kombat 2 came out, they were just as violent as the Sega version.
I remember little things like the Nes version of Earthworm Jim not having rotten fish or something, Poison being left out of Final Fight, etc. Mortal Kombat, if I recall, even forced Sega to create some sort of crappy ratings seal. Later, there was one embraced by Sega and Nintendo, and finally, the ESRB as we know it today. The logic was "If we didn't police ourselves, the Government was going to do it for us". Hate/Blame Nintendo for being kiddy but they did everything they could to try and keep us happy and keep Big Brother from shutting us down.
Here's a random video I found on youtube about Nintendo Censorship. Not as awesome as I was hoping. I'll try to see if a better one exists.
