Really good stuff here, Oyvoyvoyv. The year-by-year comparisons show how the market has changed (dramatically) since 2004. I found the publisher comparisons in America the most interesting:
Publisher Totals: (2005)
Console | Year |
---|---|
EA | 18,981,516 |
Sony | 10,148,866 |
Nintendo | 8,453,607 |
Activision | 7,125,150 |
LucasArts | 3,747,030 |
THQ | 3,512,495 |
Take 2 | 3,344,252 |
Ubisoft | 2,907,227 |
Konami | 2,067,027 |
Capcom | 1,724,625 |
Total | 73,419,969 |
EA is the dominant top dog, far outstripping everyone else, and Sony holds a strong #2 spot. Ubisoft barely even registers at #8, selling less than 1/6 of EA. Now look at the same market just two years later, in 2007:
Publisher Totals: (2007)Console | Year |
Nintendo | 41,211,836 |
EA | 30,044,143 |
Activision | 24,532,156 |
Microsoft | 12,223,246 |
Take 2 | 11,694,998 |
Sony | 11,196,138 |
Ubisoft | 11,026,366 |
THQ | 9,723,563 |
Sega | 4,846,276 |
Capcom | 3,817,968 |
Total | 194,781,412 |
Nintendo's resurgence immediately jumps out, surpassing EA (whose 2007 sales were actually lower than in 2006). Activision and Ubisoft were other big winners, dramatically increasing their share of the marketplace thanks to hit holiday titles (Guitar Hero/Assassin's Creed). Sony turns out to be a huge loser; without the gigantic userbase of the PS2 to draw upon, new IPs on the PS3 had a lot of dissapointing debuts. Microsoft actually sold more software than Sony (!), although that's somewhat deceptive because over 3/4 of the total was either Halo sales or the (bundled) Forza Motorsport title. Sega slinks back into the top 10 riding Nintendo's coattails, while noted Wii-skeptics Konami and LucasArts disappear from the list entirely.
All in all, a huge difference. Remember, it was only two years ago that many industry analysts thought we were witnessing the death of Nintendo, with the PSP certain to crush the DS and the unstoppable PS3 juggernaut sure to crush everything in its path.
End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)
