Are the Analysts Right re the Mobile Device Effect on PS Vita Sales Potential?

Seeing articles about PSV reviews I know reviewers / analysts are wrong about one thing: games on PSV are not the same as games on pads, pods and phones.

Also of extreme ignorance is putting laptops (I think I read one review mentioning laptops) into the mix when it comes to PSV sales potential. It's almost as if the reviewer doesn't realise that people have gamed on laptops for years, full PC games not merely phone / pad apps. Maybe I read that wrong.

But they could be right about one thing: there isn't room for PS Vita, phone / pad / pod gaming, and 3DS. If they are right that the market can't sustain all of these things then Vita is surely the one that will fall by the wayside. I think the portable market can most definitely sustain at least one dedicated gaming device. In this respect I don't think gamers pointing out that 3DS is selling well now means PSV will also sell well enough too. There is the distinct possibility that "there ain't enough room in this town for the both of us".

I think it all comes down to answering this question: Who bought PSPs? Was the PSP a device almost exclusively bought by...how to put it... serious(?) gamers? Or was PSP bought by many people who dabbled in gaming occasionally, i.e. people who can easily be turned towards phones / pods / pads to satisfy their gaming needs?

If PSP was bought primarily by serious gamers, then I think PSV's future looks OK. Serious gamers are not going to turn towards touchscreen only devices to meet all their gaming needs. If there were a lot of occasional gamers among PSP buyers then I think the future for PSV is not quite so rosy, most occasional gamers are going to have their smartphones and / or tablets and that will be all the gaming they need. PS Vita won't get a look in with that demographic, where PSP may have held some interest with them in past years.

I'd love to get my hands on Sony's market research into who are the PSP owners. I sure hope they did some extensive research before launching into the PSV.
