For completion's sake, the ATB was used from FF IV through IX and in X-2.

The ATB is also hidden in FF12, and it's basically there in FF13, just without the autonomy.

I think a lack of control in 13 is definitely a problem. They tried to make the pacing of the battles very frenetic, which means you dont' have as much time to select your attacks.
