FF was never popular until it jumped to PS1, before that they didn't even bother bringing all games out in west.  The multiple discs full of FMVs had a lot to do with the popularity spike, especially considering the misleading adverting.

I think he's referring to all the Final Fantasies up to 9, here - the ATB only really disappeared with 10.
