All DF are doing is suckering in investors who are not expecting a return on their investment. Smart of them, not so smart of the "investors. It's the ultimate in the caplitalist mantra: privatise the profits, socialise the risk.

How about offering the investors a financial return? The investors each own "shares" in the game proportional to their investment. Game makes a profit, the investors get their share of the profits. Game makes a loss, the investors get nothing.

Kickstarter isn't exactly opposed to the idea of traditional investment, at least not diametrically so, but that's not the point of the project or of the website itself. Kickstarter is built around people who want to see a product made that would not be made without their support. It's more like acting as a communal patron of the arts, whereby one commissions a product that one wants to see.

Not sure I get this fundamental objection to what amounts to a preorder, wrapped up in a crowdsourcing package

Not sure if this is what you meant, but I'm pretty sure financial incentives are against the rules at kickstarter
