If they consider an HD remake of FFVII to be virtually impossible for them, they have no chance to ever do that for FFVI.

Not only that, most likely it will have different battle system, and things will be shifted around, to correct potiential "errors" in the franchise, mainly after Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Last Order, and the Original Plot having number of different issues that somewhat conflict with each other. Hell I imagine Cloud will be like Final Fantasy AC Cloud, which would be a total annoyance.

But seriously, I agree with you. There has been so much BS thrown around in the FFVII compilation, that FFVII would no longer be the same game (story and gameplay wise). As for the changes in gameplay, coming from S-E I can expect anything from them, but if they (theoretically speaking) ever made a FFVII remake, one of the few things they shouldn't dare to touch has to be the Materia system. If they did, well then F' em >_>.

They could make the exact same game again in HD, with the exact same story and the characters playing it out exactly the same, with the same battle system and whatnot...If they mess with the Materia system, I won't touch the game even with a 10m long pole

I agree. I really hate how fans say "Remake FF7" and somehow Square hears "Remake FF7 with an art style like Advent Children, and with environments/cameras based on FF13"
I would MUCH rather have something similar to the actual game of FF7, except graphics tightened up while retaining their original style (give Cloud eyes, hands, and such, but keep him an FF7 style character and not an Advent Children character), and with other annoyances, such as load times, eliminated.
