"Some recent results have suggested that Sony is set for a very good 2012 indeed.

NPD Group Australia data shows the vendor has seen a 24.85 per cent year-on-year increase in unit sales. Software sales have been equally strong, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 showing the best sales figures on the PS3.

In a release, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director, Michael Ephraim, said "despite a very eventful year, these results signal the PlayStation platform's leadership position in the interactive games category in Australia."

It is worth noting that these good results have come despite a massive hack that did damage to the PlayStation brand early in 2011, suggesting that, assuming no disasters, 2012 (and with the Vita to back up hardware sales) will be a good one for Sony's gaming division.

It's also worth noting that 2011 was noteworthy in being a general contraction of the industry in Australia. The NPD Australia results also show a 12.8 per cent contraction in industry sales. That figure doesn't include digital downloads and DLC and the like, though, so that might explain away that downtick."
