(I actually thought the first hour or 2 was the worst part so far. But that's me). Some of the problems you describe, aren't unique to this one imo. Characters that make little sense battle . The game being easy. It took me 15 hours to die once in FF9, Most of FF6, FF10 it took 30 hours before I died. Not that isn't a flaw, but it's a flaw I consider most FF's to have. But still, if it bothers you, it bothers you so I have no problem with you taking it off. Also, hatmoza should quit hating the game before he plays it, or leave. |
Truth be told I'm quite amazed that I'm getting this much respect out of people. After some of my other reviews I was worried some people would just turn the review comments and this thread into a flame-war about it...since it is basically lower than any other published score to date. That said, I agree with the consistent scale and if you take a look around, you'll see that we do give a decent amount of games sub-5 scores. AMY got like...2 or something, I've given a 3.7, some games that others loved I gave 50's (Tekken Hybrid, Rocketbirds), so I know it's not just me. In fact we recently got a talking to about reminding us to use the full spectrum.
But anyway, After 10 hours I really liked it to. the first 5 hours I was planning on giving it a high 7, then as time went on, it was hovering around high 6, then about the halfway point things just got lame for me. The battles were so boring that my eyes started to glaze over and I experimented seeing what I could get done while the game played itself. I started chatting to people with my controller on my lap, not even paying attention as I pressed X a few times in between chat logs.
As time went on I started just not touching the controller at all, waiting as the allies took care of it. I got some interesting conversations out of the whole ordeal, and that's when I decided that, even though it had some great improvements to the formula, it was too tedious, too boring, and too shallow for me to give a positive score to the gameplay. I wanted to like it and for a while I did, but a game so boring you actively look for other things to do while it plays itself cannot get a good score. If any other genre did this, people would be up in arms about it. a game should not play itself, Final Fantasy was best when it was a slower, more deliberate battle system that enabled you to plan and prepare and control everything. Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 were all style and flash, no substance. (for comparison I would have given Final Fantasy XIII a 2 in the gameplay department)
but yeah, gotta use the whole scale, and a 5.4 isn't good, but it's not horrible either.
