These loses are expected. It may yet get worse before it gets better. Sony (like so many other Japanese companies) are restructuring to reflect the realities of a changing world.

For decades the US and Europe had been Sony's (or rather Japan's) bread and butter as the largest market for their goods. This is no longer the case.
China has now taken over as Japan's top exporter and these import figures will rise based on China's growth to surpass the exports of US and Europe combined but this will take time..

Russia and the other emerging economies will push exports futher forward in time.

The discovery of rare earth elements in Japan (if confirmed) will rocket their economy along with it's big electronic companies.

The Sony TV stations and all that may indeed be bad ideas but Sony is first and foremost an electronics company and need to sell electronic products to prosper.

There was an interesting discussion on the BBC News channel a couple month back and although the "experts" expect finances for SOME Japanese electronic and car companies to be poor for a couple more years they believe if these companies hang in there during this bad period the future could be very bright.
