No guys, it really wasn't.  Repeatedly tapping the D-Pad so I can dodge everything is not good gameplay.  Neither is that nailed to the ground while I shoot missiles nonsense.  I'm a big Nintendo fan and a big Metroid fan, but that game was bad.

There were some correct points, i felt. Namely i believe they found a good way to replicate the feel of 2D Metroid gameplay (if not the spirit of 2D Metroids) in a 3D space. The dodge mechanic felt like a natural addition for very fluid movement (which i'm finding is increasingly more important to me in a game). The first-person aiming mode was smooth, but ultimately unnecessary.

Essentially, if they dropped first-person-aiming and replaced it with "press minus to switch weapons," and restored Super Missiles into their own class, then made the game more exploration-friendly and restored health/missile pickups, you'd have something quite good.

What they should do is remake Metroid II with the Other M engine, but make the adjustment for missile usage. Then we could really test its viability
