Nope, lack of huge games did. It's not that people don't want to play "console-like" games, it's more that the games weren't popular enough. Are Mario Kart and SM3DLand not console like experiences, for example? Are they not very very similar to Wii/gamecube games?

The PSP had all the most popular PS2 games, except for Gran Turismo which came out late in the lifecycle of the PSP. GTA, NfS, FIFA, Pro Evo, Madden, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, virtually everything was coming. The huge games were there, they just didn't become as huge as they were on the PS2. Why didn't they sell better? Because they were inferior versions on a more expensive machine for the most part. The PS Vita is in the same boat. People are better off going with a 360 or PS3 to play the games.

Rol, as much as I agree with the main part of your post, the first part may be a tad hit and miss. Look at what's coming out for Vita and compare the quality with the PSP titles (safe CC). Look at flagships Uncharted, look at LBP, these are serious efforts. Granted UC was dev'd by Bend, not ND, but ND still offered guidance. Remember R&C, Clank or Daxter on the PSP? bastardized versions of their console counterparts. I played neither but it's my understanding they offered little appeal to the series' fans and to those who might've been interested. For this point only, I think some of us may be judging too soon with the Vita, especially in the west. Sony seems to be putting in serious efforts in their 1st party offerings this time around. So italics may have been true last gen, but might not hold true this coming gen. Last gen, Sony did not generate the userbase on PSP that would support an ecosystem where the games you listed fed and were fed through. The flagships weren't there. This time around, they are.

If UC on PS3 is indicator of interest (5.5 mil for UC2), then however the PS3 managed to sell 61+ Million units, games like that are probably an important part of the equation.

@italics. Remember that the Vita has an even larger and crisper screen than the PSP, it also now sports dual analog, so console owners in the west may feel at home with it. It's an uncertainty, but you can't rule it off, since we are trying to be objective, right friend?

So two new points to consider on this front for Vita as compared to PSP. 1) High-caliber 1st party flagship titles off the bat, and 2) hardware much more in line with current console offerings.

Then add the tapping into the casual market with touch screen, gyro and other capabilities, and games like LBP that make use if it as flagship, in the west the Vita may do much better than some of us expect. I just wouldn't want us to be biting our tongues in a few months from now you know.

Granted the article's arguments are trash, that's a fact history disproves them. But there are arguments we can make (some of us are briter than many journalists in the industry), which can at least point to a better performane of Vita as compared to PSP, at least in the west. Having said that, I don't believe the Vita will ever surpass the total sales of the 3DS, but it may achieve up to 70% of its global sales due to a boost in the all important western market (sales-wise).

Anyway, good post. Your data is informative as usual.
