The secret to success in this case was not advertising imo, it was the fact that many people wanted to like this franchise right from the start, even with only so-so (by today's inflated standards) review scores of around 80 for the first game. This universal appeal of a franchise with a historical setting surprised me. Assassin's Creed is one of the few new "traditional" gaming franchises of this casual/shooter dominated gen which can be called really successful imo.
