I'm guessing they would only tell a story if there is an interesting story to tell. Going with God of War again, the entire basis of the series can be found by asking: "Why is Kratos so pale?".

eh? no you can't :S and the color was explained as well so I don't think that's a good example

I know there are other things that go into it as well, but the whole vengeance thing was pretty much established with that.

And it's been explained because there was a good game to be had from explaining it. Why couldn't the same be true for dmc? There could be a really cool adventure in the story of how Dante's hair got white.

I don't think the reason behind why he is grey explained the vengeance plot :S wait can you remember why he is grey?

and I'm not disagreeing..small details are important to story telling and I'm on the boat that good solid interesting story PLUS gameplay > mindless story and gameplay

SPOILER!!!

Ares tricked Kratos into attacking the village where his wife and child was seeking refuge and Kratos killed them in a moment of pure bloodrage. He's pale because he was covered by the ashes of his wife and child, and after that we have the first game where he tries to kill Ares.

That's the first time any god really pisses him off.
