You havn't been to Circuit City, Best Buy, or Radio Shack lately have you?
Panasonic has a dvd player with HDMI out that says right on the marketing ish on the box/system that it will upscale DVD's to 1080p. Cost for the dvd player is $89. This is the primary reason I will not buy either a HDDVD player or bluray, as they are way over priced for thier benefits over upscaled DVD players.
