For the record (and I'm both a physicist and a real-life tenpin bowler with an average over 170), pins can go just about any which way in real life. Pins fall forwards, bounce back out of the back, sometimes even end up sliding onto the section of the lane in front of the sweep that clears the pins (thus requiring a staff member to go out and remove the pin). In fact, I've even seen one or two cases of pins falling over, only to be knocked back into a standing position... and they count as still standing. I've also seen people get the ball to fall into the gutter, jump out again, and get a strike.
I guess my point is, if Wii bowling's physics are weak at all, its weakness is not the cause of a pin moving at a 90 degree angle.
I realise that this wasn't the point of your post, but given my background, I felt it was worth correcting you on that point.
