| Zim said: I find the entire thing very odd. Most kids shows that appeal to a slightly older audience there is a reason. So with Spongebob it is the fact that it is full of utterly bizarre non-sequiturs and appeals to ahem midnight tokers. Invader Zim because it is rather horrifically dark. An entire episode centers around stealing organs and Zim is shown with intestines, livers etc in his mouth. At which point an intestine falls out and he slurps it up lol. Samurai jack one of the oddest ideas for a 'kids' show ever. Entire segments with no dialogue at all, episodes stylized after classic cinema etc. Lots of animes are simply dark, deal with adult themes etc. Other things are nostalgia. I love the transformer movies purely because they remind me of being a child and sitting watching optimus prime and megatron fight lol. But MLP is basically just a very simplistic childrens cartoon that is reasonably well done. There isn't really anything special about it. Nothing really different to say the care bears. I mean fans always say it's well done, which it is for a kids show. I'm not really sure what aspect older people are enjoying? Maybe they enjoy it because it makes them feel like a child, but then why not watch something from childhood? It's just this thing where mid 20 guys like it because hey others do too! |
Being naturally curious and after hearing many, many people claim their undying love for the show, I decided to investigate after reading this thread. And yes, the show is surprisingly (for me) well done. The art style is great, all the voice acting is spot on, and there's plenty of laughs to be had. I do think that it is, at least partly, the simple nature of the show that appeals to so many people, in addition to the tongue in cheek humour (yep). I'll admit that trying to keep an open mind about this show was hard, cause... it's about freaking ponies. But it is quite entertaining, and a lot of that has to do with the characters and the humour. And if you can ignore the cheesy "friendship" message at the end of each episode.
That said, I'm also a fan of Spongebob (partly because I grew up with the show; the later ones aren't as good though), and both my sisters and myself love Invader Zim (one sister and I got the other sister and her husband Gir snuggies. She of course immediately put it on and wore it for the rest of the day).
