It's pretty bad for both a Final Fantasy and a JRPG. It really does feel like a game that went through developer hell and was released in an unfinished state with just story and battle system shoved together. Nice artwork but not a lot else. It does pick up a bit towards the middle but nowhere near enough.

May be bad as a jRPG in your opinion, but if we look at the average critics its a good jRPG. I understand that critics arent important for your personal preferences but it needs to be taken in perspective to make such kind of statement.

If you took Final Fantasy out of the name I seriously doubt it would have scored particularly high. If you rate it as a JRPG there are very few actual features that would even constitute it as such. It does the bare minimum (battle system & story) albeit very polished.

Admitedly, JRPGs this gen on HD consoles haven't been particularly good, but in the genre as a whole FFXIII can hardly be considerred good (critics included).

It could arguably be detrimental too. I could come up with many quote of reviewers showing they were harsher because of the Final Fantasy name on it. But, if my mother had wheels it would have been a car you know. In the world of the "IF" everything is possible so im not going to make a solid statement it would have been better or worst without the FF name on it. The reality just show its higher then the average jRPG (particularly nowadays). I do agree that recent years (not just on HD console) hasnt been the best when it comes to jRPG. The last jRPG I really really liked before Xenoblade came out was Suikoden 5.

The tendency for hugely hyped games is the majority will rate it higher because it's bigger budget. If you actually read the bulk of text, a number of reviews that made valid criticisms still gave it a decent score. Another example of this phenomenon would be GTAIV, I doubt many would think it's truly worthy of 98 even though all the critics scored it highly.

There are decent JRPGs out there although for me I don't think any have really managed to replicate the epic feel of Chrono Trigger, Grandia or the older Final Fantasy games. They're mainly low budget, strategy JRPGs or more action based RPGs like Demon's Souls. Just ordered Xenoblade so hopefully that'll change that.
