You have to balance the fact that they want more people to be able to finish the game, as Rol said, and you would be surprised what sorts of things people are unable to figure out on their own, which is not an "lol stupid people" comment, but rather that sometimes we all just have those brain farts that keep us from doing the simplest of things.
The advisory against going in the crater was an advisory against dying, i imagine, which can be quite frustrating
