Since thing is kind of non-specific, if you are talking about the middle prong (it was called the trident controller) it was where you held it while using the analog stick which made reaching it a  bit more comfortable. (The controller was kind of big for the time so only people with big hands could reach stick comforably.)

 

If you are talking about the underneth of the controller. There was a z-button trigger that was the replacement for the L shoulder button when your hand was there. And there was the expansion modual which was used for memory cards, the GB adapter, the rumble pack etc. (The GB adapter made the controller look like it was themed off of a bad Star Trek ship.)

I'm talking about the bottom side of Wii U tablet controler :)
