It will likely not sell anywhere near the original wii due to the already massive tablet market. Obviously they recognize this being a problem, as they are trying to distance the system from being labeled a tablet of any kind. We know the M$ is probably already putting together a software update that will enable all windows 8 tablets to link to the nextbox and thus eliminate nintendo's thunder a bit if not entirely. It will depend on how portable the wiiU controller is without the system. We will have to wait til summer to have a real good idea of the true specs of the wiiU.

While it may or may not sell as well as the Wii, I don't think the tablet market will have much of an influence on it ...

Between the iPad, Android tablets, Window's 8 based devices, and the handful of alternative platfoms each with a variety of different hardware versions and capabilities it would be a fairly large challenge to implement similar functionality in a peacemeal way.

Beyond that, much like the Wii, the greatest potential for the Wii U is mixing conventional and alternative controls as it makes sense in the game; as an example, games that are a mixture of action and puzzles can use the conventional controls for the action and use the much more expressive motion controls and touch screen to handle puzzle elements. This kind of gameplay could not be replicated with a tablet because of the absence of conventional controls.

Finally, while I expect third party developers to do better with the Wii U than they did with the Wii simply because of its familarity to the DS and 3DS, being that Nintendo saw the need for this interface and has a long track record of success in creating games that take advantage of new user interfaces I expect Nintendo to create the games that define how this device should be used.
