If this does not become the case, then at least there are first party offerings. In some ways I would like it if one of the two companies made a much more powerful system while the other tried a more casual offering. Maybe if we have either a Gears 4, or Uncharted 4 that blows away 3rd party offerings people will start to ask why. If Sony or Microsoft are willing to step it up, it could be very good for them, and PC gamers for the next 6 - 8 years.
My fanboy side says that Sony has built up a massive first party development studio just to make this a reality. They can sell a $500 PS4 that blows the competition away, and they can max out the graphics, while 3rd parties try to make the same game across all three platforms. In my fanboy world;
WiiU - $299 launch 2GB RAM/No HDD/IBM Power 7 4 core/AMD midrange XB3 - $399 launch 4GB RAM/HDD/IBM Power 7 8core/AMD top end PS4 - $499 launch 8GB RAM/SSD/IBM Power 8 24 Core/Nvidia top end 1 series newer than xb3
No matter what I will have all three regardless though.

I like your fanboy vision but for me it's essential that two of the three nexgen consoles are hardcore powerful and not casual because all my favorite franchises are multiplatform (Elder Scrolls, Creed, Fallout, Battelfield, Half Life, Dark Souls, Bioshock, Dragan Age, Red Dead and so on) and i really really want their next iterations to look next gen.

Listen, jsut because Bethesda lets themselves be tethered by the ancient console architecture, so much so that their PC games suffer for it, doesn't mean the others necessarily will. Rest assured that the Half-Life games do not depend on console architecture at all, and the best version of Battlefield won't either (just like it didn't this gen).

Look, all multiplatform games are the same game on consoles and PC. The only difference is the ability to crank up resolution, AF, AA, framerate and the occasional meaningless shadow/lighting effect. Architectire, polygons and lots of essential stuff that is the difference maker between generations are left unchanged from console to PC version.
This includes Battlefield 3 despite all the promices by DICE to take advantage of the PC, Just watch:
