With some actions, like the rhythm game, it's intuitive to think that it's the motion sensor which is the relevant input, but it's actually the IR sensor which is utilized. It's looking for a streak of IR to flash by the camera on the beat, so a vigorous shake will fail if the wiimote isn't suddenly pointed at the screen.
