I can see why hardcore adventure gamers don't like it. It's not a traditional adventure game in a lot of respects.
The fact that it's broken down into levels(Most adventure games are set up to be a bit more 'open'), it's story-light(most adventure games are more story driven than other genres) and that it has a relatively harsh death penalty(as far as adventure games go) kind of push it near the edge of what your average adventure game fan is looking for.
It looks as if the Wii will be getting some Sam & Max love, though, which is closer to what the traditional adventure gamer is looking for.
